Critics Consensus

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children proves a suitable match for Tim Burton's distinctive style, even if it's on stronger footing as a visual experience than a narrative one.

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children | Rotten Tomatoes (1) Udita Jhunjhunwala Livemint Visually sumptuous but dull, this is not the joyously peculiar Burton of Edward Scissorhands or Beetlejuice, but a dialed-down version... Jul 31, 2019 Full Review Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children | Rotten Tomatoes (2) Kristen Lopez Culturess Miss Peregrine is a return to form for Burton. Nov 20, 2017 Full Review Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children | Rotten Tomatoes (3) Angie Han Slashfilm Despite its stated obsession with all things "peculiar," there's little about this movie that is actually surprising. It comes across like a movie going through the motions of setting up a franchise, not a movie eager to bring you on a wild adventure. Rated: 5/10 Jun 16, 2017 Full Review Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children | Rotten Tomatoes (4) Denise Pieniazek A Sala Llena (Argentina) Consequently, even if the script or the original idea is not his own, Burton always imposes his imprint on the story. The film immerses us in the mystery from the beginning with its monsters that mix the aesthetics of classic science fiction cinema... Rated: 6/10 Jan 14, 2024 Full Review Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children | Rotten Tomatoes (5) Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children feels strange for the sake of strangeness. This is a shame because there was a lot of potential to tell a story that resonated with young people who feel like outsiders. Rated: 2/4 Apr 11, 2022 Full Review Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children | Rotten Tomatoes (6) Victoria Luxford City AM Burtons films have felt neutered over the last decade by expensive effects and family-friendly themes. Of his recent mainstream output, this is one of the more unrestrained and enjoyable adventures. Rated: 3/5 Feb 18, 2022 Full Review Read all reviews

William C A really inappropriate matching of content and director. Tim Burton takes a really wonderful dark children's fairy tale (that is way too dark for children) and runs it through his rainbow and candy-coated filter with side dish of whimsy to create a concrete casket for a seemingly lucrative franchise. This is a dark and complicated story and nothing about this movie is either dark or complicated. When I read the books to my daughters years ago, at no point did I think, "Oh, this really reminds me of Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, and Jack Nicholson's take on the Joker, all at the same time." I'm hoping that in 10 or 15 years, Guillermo del Toro or Alphonso Cuaron (two directors who know how to put children in peril) will be daring enough to remake this (once the TB radioactivity dies down). While wikipedia says that Burton is famous for his "gothic horror and fantasy films," aside from his very early work, there is nothing horrific or fantastic about his output. Except for maybe his versions of Planet of the Apes or Charlie and the Chocolate factory both of which were seriously horrific. Some of the narrative is convoluted and you have to look askance at it to make sense of it all. Predictable, but enjoyable and some cherry performances. Would make for a nice redo as a multipart series. Rated 3.5/5 Stars • Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/18/24 Full Review Haddon F The movie somehow managed to deviate from the books to the point where the entire second half of the movie is different. Samuel L. Jackson is the only good thing about this movie. Rated 1.5/5 Stars • Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 12/23/23 Full Review Eric S Cool movie. Cgi not goodnin some parts but story and world building is good. Close to the books. Rated 3.5/5 Stars • Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 12/22/23 Full Review Alec B It's actually not as terrible as I anticipated. True, the second half completely collapses under the weight of the convoluted plot but before that happens the movie is well paced and comically dark.
